Vaping is widely accepted as a healthy alternative to cigarettes. But what happens when you don’t have your trusty pen or mod nearby? Let’s explore some viable options on how to vape without a vape. They range from crafting a quick DIY rig to slicing bottles and bendy straws.

How to Vape Without a Vape?

1. Opt for PVC Pipes

With patience and a few simple items, you can construct a vape at home and start enjoying fumes in seconds. For this version, you’ll need a PVC pipe or cardboard tubing, the bottle cap from a beauty bottle (e.g. for shampoo, lotion, face wash, hand sanitizer, etc.), a 3.7V battery, some skinny wire, a bit of cardboard, and glue. Cut the pipe so it fits the battery exactly.

Seal the two tips of the pipe with cardboard, securing the battery between them. Use the thin wire to make a coil that sits at the top, load it with a wick, and soak the wick with e-liquid. A bottle cap glued to the top serves as your inhalation point. Under the cardboard cover, a set of wires will complete the circuit with the battery, powering the vape when you breathe in.

2. Understand the Concept of Vaping

Vaping is inhaling heated e-juice or e-liquid. It’s safer than cigarettes because this fluid lacks tar and other toxic additives associated with tobacco products. E-liquids are available both with and without nicotine. The nicotine options are made with synthetic nicotine formulated in a lab. This is a healthier option than the farm-grown nicotine you’ll find in tobacco plants.

All that complex gadgetry inside a vape pen is way more basic than you’d think. It’s just a heated coil gripping a saturated wick and sealed in an airtight container. So if you don’t have a vape pen or mod handy, construct a coil, wrap it around a wick, and load the whole thing with e-liquid. The coil is a long, thin, ductile piece of metal that conducts heat and electricity.

Twist the wire tightly around a cylindrical object. Link its ends to a battery. This converts DC to heat. The coil often gets red hot so position it where it won’t burn your fingers, ignite into live flames, or melt any plastic that nearby. For the wick, use cotton twisted into a dense thin wad. Drip the e-liquid onto the wick with a tit dropper, baster, syringe, or an e-liquid nozzle.

You can then heat it and enjoy a few more hits from the disposable – there’s more e-liquid in there than you’d think! Try not to overdo it though, since that wick may start to burn and release noxious fumes. Stop once it’s all dry.

7. Make Yourself a Quick Fork Vape

You can construct a workable vape out of pretty much anything. Here, we’re using a fork and a battery. You want a sealed dry cell, which you can get at the hardware store. Just be careful to get a safe battery that won’t explode in your face. Vape mod shops sell spare batteries so you could get some that way. Use pliers and/or a hammer to fold the fork prongs into place.

Position the tines to securely support the positive terminal so the power flows uninterrupted. You’ll need an atomizer for this rig, and you can buy that from the vape mod store as well. If you don’t have a battery or atomizer, grab some cotton wool or a used wick from a disposable vape. Stick them between the fork tines, light them up, and guide the fumes toward yourself.

8. Use Some Hot Knives

You can hold a cardboard tube, a plastic cup with a straw poked through the bottom, or a PET bottle with its base cut open. This guides the vapor toward your nose and mouth. Since the hot knife or spoon has a small surface area, very little vapor will waft, and you won’t get much smoke. Bathrooms are good since the reflective tiles bounce the vapor back to you.

9. Grab a Cardboard Box and a Mason Jar

This DIY vape is simple, but it involves a few additional steps. First, you need a carton box without a lid. A shoe box or hat box will do fine. Next, get a candle that’s small enough to sit in the box without touching the sides. Find a mason jar with a metal lid. Poke a small hole in the lid where you can snake a straw or pipe. Alternatively, poke a hole in the side of the jar.

Pour your e-liquid onto the lid, close the jar, and position the lid over the candle. The flame will vaporize the liquid, which will then fill the jar. Now you can use your straw or pipe to inhale the fumes and voilà! Just be careful that the candle doesn’t set the cardboard box on fire. You can put the e-juice in a glass ramekin inside the lid so that it doesn’t spill off the lid.

10. Dabbing Vape Juice

If you have a dab rig or a hookah, you can repurpose them for vaping. Both gadgets have a tray where you can place your incense or raw herbs. Instead, put some e-juice on a small tray that conducts heat. You can now use the pipe as normal, but you’ll be inhaling e-juice vapor in place of solids or wax. Another option is to drop the e-juice onto the head of a large nail.

Carefully heat the nail until it’s red hot before dripping the e-liquid into it. As the fumes start to waft, use a cardboard tube, bottle, or the dab itself to pull the vapor toward you. If you’re using a nail, you can heat it with a culinary torch or a candle. Be careful not to burn yourself with the hot metal, and be wary of any clutter, paper, fabric, or flammable materials nearby.
